Turning Pineapple Waste into Eco-Friendly Pulp
A Circular Solution to Pineapple Waste
Eco:fibr has developed a sustainable solution to address the environmental issues associated with pineapple cultivation in Costa Rica. By utilizing plant residues from pineapple production, the company creates eco-friendly pulp, alleviating disposal problems for producers. Their extraction process has been optimized through ongoing research, avoiding harmful chemicals and using only oxygen-based bleaching agents if necessary. The resulting pulp is dried and marketed to the paper industry, where it can be transformed into specialty products like wall coverings, artist papers and packaging.
Using only agriculture residue for pulp production, eco:fibr is able to avoid the cultivation of raw materials. Among the many benefits they express, the company claims 860,000 trees could be saved from logging each year through the usage of pineapple pulp.
Eco:fibr is still in its pilot phase currently testing their material with customers from the pulp industry.
