BioORMOCER<\/h2>\n\n

The Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC<\/em> is developing sustainable multifunctional barrier coatings for easily recyclable, bio-based or compostable packaging: BioORMOCER<\/em> is a bio-based, compostable coating using residual materials from food production or other biological waste streams. This coating has very good barrier properties against water vapor, oxygen, aromas and plasticizers. The coating is applied to the packaging materials in an ultra-thin layer and does not interfere with the conventional recycling process. Large quantities of composite film can thus be replaced by recyclable materials – without any loss of quality in the packaged products. <\/p>\n\n

With this newly developed BioORMOCER<\/em> material class, the Fraunhofer ISC offers a practicable option for upgrading bioplastics for packaging in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors. BioORMOCER materials<\/em> can be applied as a barrier coating to bioplastics and conventional plastics or paper. <\/p>\n\n
