According to the United Nations, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwater.org\/water-facts\/water-food-and-energy\/\">water-food-energy nexus<\/a> is key to the sustainable development of our societies. Demand for all three is increasing, driven by a rising global population, rapid urbanization, changing dietary habits and, of course, overall economic growth. And since agriculture is now not only the largest consumer of the world&#8217;s freshwater resources, but also accounts for more than a quarter of the energy consumed worldwide for food production and supply, the solutions lie precisely in thinking about these areas together.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.milk-food.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Agrivoltaic.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-655809\" style=\"width:956px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.milk-food.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Agrivoltaic.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.milk-food.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Agrivoltaic-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.milk-food.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Agrivoltaic-480x320.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/www.milk-food.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Agrivoltaic-200x133.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.milk-food.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Agrivoltaic-500x334.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/www.milk-food.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Agrivoltaic-1000x667.jpeg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-serif has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A promising approach in this context is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topagrar.com\/energie\/news\/agriphotovoltaik-oben-strom-unten-pflanzen-12479281.html\">agriphotovoltaics<\/a>, i.e. the simultaneous use of land for crops and for solar power production. The benefits of increased land efficiency are obvious: solar power production is expanded while fertile land is preserved and used for agriculture. What&#8217;s more, arable crops are protected from drought damage and weather effects such as hail damage or heavy rain. Also, the solar panels reduce the evaporation rate and foil tunnels can sometimes be replaced.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-serif has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This counteracts the trend of desertification and soil degradation. For example, the world&#8217;s largest agri-PV plant is located on the edge of the Gobi Desert in China: berries are grown under solar modules with a capacity of 700 MW.
