The interest group expects capacities to increase to 6.3 million tons by 2027. 51% of these are biodegradable plastics such as PLA and PHA. Terms like \u201ccompostable\u201d regularly cause confusion among consumers, as most industrially compostable bioplastics do not fully degrade within the short processing times of real composting facilities and leave behind residues. A survey of waste management companies conducted by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) shows that 95 percent of composting facilities in Germany cannot process bioplastic products in accordance with standards, and 80 percent simply classify them as contaminants.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This situation led to an amendment to the Biowaste Ordinance (BioAbfV) in 2023.  <br\/>Now biowaste may only contain a maximum of 0.5 percent plastics before it is sent for composting or fermentation. In future, this value will also apply to packaging and coffee capsules that are advertised as biodegradable plastic products. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">So what can the bioplastics industry do?  <br\/>One solution lies in materials that do not require industrial composting facilities at all, but instead break down in home compost bins or in nature. Companies such as the British startup <a href=\"https:\/\/notpla.com\/\">Notpla<\/a>, which supplies plastic-free packaging coatings made from seaweed for the food service industry, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sulapac.com\/materials\/?utm_term=sulapac&amp;utm_campaign=Google+Ads+-+Sulapac+brand&amp;utm_source=adwords&amp;utm_medium=ppc&amp;hsa_acc=4234135278&amp;hsa_cam=14245336050&amp;hsa_grp=123642905017&amp;hsa_ad=788548057161&amp;hsa_src=g&amp;hsa_tgt=kwd-765818236522&amp;hsa_kw=sulapac&amp;hsa_mt=e&amp;hsa_net=adwords&amp;hsa_ver=3&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=14245336050&amp;gbraid=0AAAAACeAzlCrR4OhxfdEqfkub6N_5AWSs&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI84342M2ElgMVec9EBx2DqxtPEAAYASAAEgIim_D_BwE\">Sulapac<\/a> from Finland, which is making inroads into the cosmetics sector with wood-based, fully biodegradable materials, are doing pioneering work in this area. <a href=\"https:\/\/shellworks.com\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/shellworks.com\">Shellworks<\/a>, too, is demonstrating with its microbially produced material <em>Vivomer<\/em> that packaging can behave like plastic but break down in the soil without leaving any residue.
