Novula – A Little Break on the Cloud

According to recent surveys, a large portion of the working population reports feeling mentally overwhelmed on a regular basis—triggered by time pressure, constant availability, sensory overload, and the constant demand to maintain high performance. The World Health Organization now ranks stress among the greatest health risks of the 21st century. A study by TK even shows that two-thirds of all Germans feel stressed. In everyday life, there is often a lack of simple, accessible ways to take brief countermeasures. Between to-do lists, meetings, and commuting from A to B, there’s hardly any room for breaks that actually happen.

This is exactly where Novula comes in. In our“Future Products” series, we explore concepts that challenge and rethink existing routines. A “Future Product” doesn’t have to be flashy or disruptive. Sometimes, a small shift in the system is enough. Novula isn’t a new need, but a new solution to a very real problem: mental overload in everyday life—and the desire for a brief respite in between.

The concept

Novula is an edible gel inspired by traditional sports gels—but with a completely different focus. Instead of providing energy for the body, Novula offers gentle support for the mind. Tear it open, relax for a moment, and carry on at your own pace.
No water, no preparation. The formulas are based on functional plant compounds and adaptogens that are traditionally associated with calm, focus, or balance. Deliberately low-dose, without overstimulation, and without performance claims.

The three varieties address typical everyday situations: moments after experiencing stress, times when clarity is needed, or moments when you simply want to feel a little more “grounded.” Novula views mental health not as a project aimed at optimization, but as something situational—something that shifts constantly in everyday life and benefits from small nudges.

The Packaging

Packaging is a key component of the concept. Novula comes in an edible algae film that is consumed along with the gel. This eliminates a major problem with traditional on-the-go products: packaging waste. Small portion sizes, in particular, generate a disproportionately large amount of waste, which is rarely recycled and often ends up in the environment.

Algae-based films offer an exciting approach here. Algae grow quickly, require neither farmland nor freshwater, and do not compete with agricultural crops. They sequester CO₂ as they grow and can even help improve water quality in coastal regions. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, algae-based films are biodegradable—or, in this case, completely edible. Packaging is thus no longer a necessary evil, but rather part of the product.

Novula operates at the intersection of functional food, mental wellbeing, and sustainable packaging. The product is deliberately designed to be accessible: not a supplement with medical claims, not a lifestyle gadget, but a practical, everyday solution. For your purse, backpack, or desk. For those moments when you don’t want to check out, but just need a little support.

With its Future Product, Novula demonstrates how multiple challenges can be addressed at once: mental overload, a lack of breaks in daily life, and the environmental issue of packaging and waste. Not by doing without or overcomplicating things, but by simplifying them. A small, gentle moment—and then it’s back to business.
