Bioplastics

Meaning

What are bioplastics?

Bioplastics are plastics that are made entirely or partially from renewable raw materials and/or are biodegradable. Important: Not every bioplastic is automatically biodegradable – and not every biodegradable plastic is biobased. The term therefore covers different material groups with different properties and areas of application.

In food packaging, bioplastics are mainly used where brands are looking for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics without compromising on product protection, hygiene and functionality. Frequently used materials include PLA (polylactide), bio-based PE and cellulose films.

For food brands, bioplastics are a visible signal of environmental awareness and innovative strength – provided they are used sensibly and communicated transparently.

Why bioplastics are relevant for food brands

The use of sustainable materials is no longer a niche topic. Consumers are increasingly looking for packaging that conserves resources, is recyclable or is made from renewable raw materials. Bioplastics offer a wide range of options here – but must always be considered in the context of product protection, disposal routes and legal requirements.

The most important advantages at a glance:

  • Reduction of fossil raw materials through the use of bio-based materials
  • Positive brand perception through visible sustainability measures
  • Innovative material solutions for modern product concepts
  • Wide range of applications for bags, films, trays or viewing windows

At the same time, a differentiated view is important: not all bio-based packaging is automatically more environmentally friendly. The decisive factors are recyclability, disposal systems and the actual ecological footprint.

Best practices for packaging & brand strategy

Using sustainable materials strategically

Bioplastics should always be selected on a product-specific basis. Criteria such as durability, barrier protection, recyclability and legal requirements must be included in the material decision. Modern packaging concepts therefore often combine bio-based materials with recyclable monostructures or functional coatings.

Professional packaging development combines material consulting, packaging design and sustainability communication.

Transparent communication on the packaging

In order for consumers to understand the benefits of bioplastics, clear and comprehensible information is needed on the packaging – for example on the origin of the raw materials, recyclability or disposal methods. Icons, short texts or seals help to explain complex topics simply and build trust.
