Compostable packaging

Meaning

What is compostable packaging?

Compostable packaging is packaging that can be biodegraded under defined conditions and decomposes into water, CO₂ and biomass. It often consists of bio-based plastics, paper composites or natural fibers and is used as an alternative to conventional plastics.

It is important to differentiate between industrially compostable and home compostable. Many materials only degrade in industrial composting facilities with controlled temperature and humidity. It is therefore crucial for food brands to correctly label and transparently communicate the respective disposal options.

Compostable packaging is part of a broader sustainability strategy and should always be considered in the context of recyclability, material use and actual disposal infrastructure.

Why compostable packaging is relevant for food brands

Sustainability has become a key purchasing criterion. Consumers increasingly expect environmentally friendly packaging solutions – at the same time, there is often uncertainty about what “compostable” really means.

The most important advantages:

  • Positive environmental perception: signal for ecological commitment
  • Use of bio-based raw materials: reduction of fossil resources
  • Innovation potential: differentiation on the shelf
  • Support for sustainability goals

At the same time, compostable packaging also poses challenges, for example in terms of barrier properties, shelf life and disposal. A sound choice of materials is therefore essential.

Best practices for packaging & brand strategy

Carefully coordinate material and application

Not every product is suitable for compostable materials. Factors such as moisture, fat content or shelf life requirements must be taken into account. Hybrid solutions that combine sustainability and product protection often make sense.

This is where material consulting, packaging development and sustainability strategy come together.

Communicating sustainability clearly and credibly

Terms such as “compostable” should always be explained and supplemented with clear disposal instructions. Icons, short texts or QR codes help to avoid misunderstandings and build trust.
