Monomaterial
Meaning
What is a monomaterial?
Monomaterial packaging is packaging that consists entirely or predominantly of just one type of material – for example, plastic, paper or aluminum. In contrast to composite materials, which combine several layers of material, mono-material packaging is designed in such a way that it is easier to sort and recycle.
In the food sector, mono-material solutions are increasingly being used as an alternative to traditional multi-layer composites. Today, modern material technologies make it possible to achieve sufficient barrier properties against oxygen, moisture or grease with a single material. This means that product protection and recyclability can be better combined.
Monomaterial is therefore an important building block for recycling-friendly packaging design.
Why monomaterial is so relevant for food brands
Recyclability is a key criterion of modern packaging strategies. Many existing composite packaging materials are difficult or impossible to recycle. Mono-material packaging facilitates sorting in recycling plants and increases the likelihood that materials will actually be recycled.
The most important advantages:
- Better recyclability: clear material allocation
- Supporting the circular economy: higher recycling rates
- Positive perception of sustainability: understandable solution for consumers
- Future-proof: adaptation to increasing regulatory requirements
For food brands, however, monomaterial also means rethinking product protection, shelf life and machinability.
Best practices for packaging & brand strategy
Coordinate product protection and material structure
Not every food is automatically suitable for mono-material packaging. Fat content, moisture and desired shelf life determine which material types and film thicknesses are appropriate. Specially coated or oriented mono-material films are often used.
This is where material consulting, packaging development and sustainability strategy come together.
Clearly communicate recyclability
Mono-material solutions should be explained clearly on the packaging. Recycling instructions, icons or short texts help consumers to dispose of the material correctly and strengthen the credibility of the sustainability message.
