Recyclate
Meaning
What is recyclate?
Recyclate refers to material that is obtained from recycled waste and reused as a raw material. In the packaging sector, this usually involves recycled plastics, paper fibers or metals that are collected, sorted and processed after use.
In the food sector, recyclate is mainly used for plastic packaging (e.g. rPET) or paper-based solutions. The aim is to reduce the use of primary raw materials and keep materials in the cycle for as long as possible. A distinction is made between post-consumer recyclate (from household waste) and post-industrial recyclate (from production waste).
Recyclate is a key component of sustainable packaging concepts.
Why recyclate is so relevant for food brands
The use of recyclates actively contributes to the conservation of resources and the reduction of CO₂ emissions. At the same time, the topic is becoming increasingly important due to regulatory requirements and rising consumer expectations.
The most important advantages:
- Reduced use of raw materials: less need for new materials
- Supporting the circular economy: materials remain in circulation
- Improved environmental balance: reduction of the CO₂ footprint
- Positive brand perception: visible commitment to sustainability
For food brands, however, it is important to consider the specific requirements for food safety and material quality.
Best practices for packaging & brand strategy
Targeted and sensible use of recyclate
Not all applications are equally suitable for the use of recyclates. Factors such as product protection, hygiene requirements and legal regulations must be taken into account at an early stage.
This is where material consulting, packaging development and sustainability strategy come together.
Communicating recyclate transparently
The use of recycled materials should be communicated clearly and comprehensibly on the packaging. Information on the recycled content or corresponding icons strengthen credibility and help consumers to classify the product.
