Structural design of packaging material, design language and functionality.

Plastic reduction

Renewable raw materials: replace plastic where possible and sensible.

Conserve resources & strengthen brand

New aesthetics based on the packaging strategy.

We optimize your packaging structurally and in close consultation with all departments involved. These are both aesthetic and functional developments.

The transition to our Sustainable Packaging Service is seamless: conserving resources, optimizing recyclability and increasing the proportion of recyclate. Are you interested in your own packaging strategy? Then let’s develop your short-term optimization and long-term packaging transformation together.

Structural design: packaging with substance – form follows function & brand

Good packaging starts with structure. Structural design creates the form, function and format of the packaging – tailored to the product, brand, material and application. It is the first physical expression of an idea – and crucial for impact, use, sustainability and differentiation.

We develop structural concepts that make brands visible and tangible – creative, functional and suitable for production.

What is structural packaging design?

Structural packaging design refers to the three-dimensional development of packaging – from the technical structure to the opening concept to the choice of material. It’s about design, volume, stability, feel and usability – but also about transportability, logistics, recycling and brand impact.

In combination with graphic design, this creates holistic packaging that not only looks good, but also works.

Our services in structural design

We offer a comprehensive range of services – from initial ideas to production-ready development:

  • Conception of packaging forms – adapted to content, positioning, target group
  • Development of punching contours & folding mechanisms – incl. ECMA/FEFCO standards or individual designs
  • 3D design & CAD modelling – for realistic visualization & technical feasibility
  • Material advice – from cardboard to monomaterial, recyclable & sustainable
  • Prototyping & mockups – for testing haptics, handling, shelf impact and design integration
  • Advice on production implementation – printing, die-cutting, gluing, automation

Why structural design is crucial

Packaging is the first physical contact between product and consumer – and influences the impulse to buy, brand recognition and user experience. The structure determines:

  • Ergonomics & function: How easy is the packaging to open, hold and reseal?
  • Product presentation: How can content be seen, experienced and protected?
  • Sustainability: How much material is used, how recyclable is it?
  • Efficiency: How easy is handling, storage, transportation, filling?

Those who think strategically about structure save resources – and gain brand power.

From whiteboard to CAD model: our process

Every structure starts with an idea – but our development is based on a clearly defined process:

  1. Analysis & briefing – product, target group, requirements, logistics, environmental goals
  2. Sketches & brainstorming – shape studies, folding, mechanics, differentiation
  3. Technical design – CAD design, dimensions, material definition
  4. Prototyping – dummy construction, feasibility test, presentation samples
  5. Release & implementation – production data, coordination with manufacturers

The result is packaging that combines design vision and industrial reality.

Specialization in sustainable structures

We always think about structure in ecological terms: less use of materials, better recyclability, more efficient logistics. We focus on this:

  • Monomaterial concepts
  • Space-saving folding techniques
  • Structures without adhesive
  • Material substitution (cardboard instead of plastic)
  • Transport optimization through modular dimensions

The result is packaging that is ecologically sound and economically efficient – without compromising on design.

Typical types of packaging that we develop

  • Folding cartons – classic, with innovative opening mechanisms
  • Sleeves & banderoles – variable, minimalist
  • Food trays & inserts – for protection and staging
  • Gift boxes – emotional, high-quality, multi-part
  • POS packaging – shelf-ready & sales-optimized
  • Prototypes & custom-made products – for trade fairs, presentations or testing

Interplay of structure and design

Structural design should not be viewed in isolation – but always in interaction with graphics, text, material and brand history. That’s why our structural designers work closely with the creative direction, branding, artwork and content team.

The result: packaging that brings together form, content and story – consistent from the inside out.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about structural design

How long does a structural project take?

Depending on the complexity: from a few days (e.g. for adaptations) to several months for new development, testing and prototyping. We work in a modular and agile way – we agree on individual time frames.

Are there ready-made templates or is everything developed individually?

Both are possible. For some applications, we use proven ECMA/FEFCO basic shapes, which we adapt individually. We also develop our own structures for special requirements.

What if I am already working with a print shop?

No problem – we coordinate closely with production and supply print-ready CAD data, samples or open designs that can be transferred directly.

Can you also structure sustainable packaging?

Yes – that is one of our main focuses. We always think about structure in conjunction with material selection, recyclability and CO₂ optimization. On request, we can also support recyclability assessments or PPWR-compliant developments.

Can I just develop the structure with you, without graphics?

Yes – we offer structural design as a standalone service or integrated with branding & artwork. You decide how much you need.

Conclusion: packaging starts with the right structure

Design that stands out. Function that convinces. Sustainability that works. All this starts with a well thought-out structural design. We help brands to find the perfect packaging shape – creative, functional and ready for the real world.
