New food concepts need innovative materials.
Welcome to our glossary, which deals with new materials for foodpackaging.
In the MILK. Material Lab, we combine design expertise with materials technology research to develop pioneering packaging solutions for food brands. Our focus is on the identification, evaluation and integration of innovative and sustainable packaging materials – always with an eye on regulatory requirements, brand aesthetics and economic feasibility.
As a strategic partner in the FMCG sector, we analyze existing packaging systems, test new materials for their market suitability and develop design solutions that fit seamlessly into the product, brand and supply chain. We always take a systemic approach to packaging: from monomaterials and recycling-friendly design to alternative fibers and fully compostable solutions.
Our interdisciplinary team works at the interface of materials research, product development and design strategy – agile, practical and open to technology. In close cooperation with manufacturers, start-ups and industry partners, the Material Lab not only develops know-how, but also real application solutions that help brands to act ecologically and at the same time set design standards – design made in Germany.
Whether redesigning existing packaging or developing future-proof materials, the MILK. Material Lab creates the packaging of tomorrow – well-founded, innovative and brand-strong.
Materials in focus – a thematic cross-section
Organic & renewable materials
Natural and renewable raw materials are becoming increasingly important – from fiber-based packaging and bio-based plastics to fungal and algae materials. The trend is moving away from the petroleum-based material mainstream towards solutions that fit into cycles and have a low environmental impact.
Smart & functional material design
Materials with additional functionalities – such as barrier-protecting films, active additives (e.g. antimicrobial or aroma-absorbing) or temperature-controlled surfaces – are setting new standards in food and packaging applications. Intelligent materials combine protection, efficiency and user experience.
Reuse, recycling & circular materials
The circular economy is slowly becoming the standard: reusable systems, recyclable composite materials, but also up- and down-cycling of secondary materials are key topics. The aim is genuine material transformation instead of just “biodegradation” – in other words: durable, reusable, resource-saving.
Digital & regulatory driven materials
The use of materials is increasingly influenced by digital technologies and legal framework conditions: e.g. material labeling with NFC/QR, digital product passports, new legal requirements (e.g. EU regulations on packaging) – and the resulting new material requirements in terms of recyclability, transparency and sustainability.
Here you will find our selection of solutions for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. But the future is being made today: and that’s why, in addition to promising future materials, we are also looking at the most important developments in the packaging sector today.
